A series of expansive murals by four Bay Area artists transformed blank concrete walls along Yerba Buena Gardens into a tapestry of Yerba Buena’s and SoMa’s ethos in 2023-2024. Woven Kultura by Dee Jae Pa’este embraces symbols and images of SoMa’s history featuring native indigenous land, textile factories, the neighborhood’s underground music scene and Filipino immigrant history. Sanctorum by Mel Vera Cruz features colorful images invoking freedom, growth and revolution with Filipino icons, and reflects the city as a place of innovation in art, music and science, and of tolerance and inclusiveness. Dito Kami by ChiChai showcases sisterhood and what Filipina women have contributed to San Francisco historically and today, with Philippine trinkets and flora on the fusion of an old MUNI bus and jeepney, the latter of which is used as public transportation in the Philippines. Day Dreamin’ by Filipino-American artist Dre Sibayande is an ode to youthful imagination — a love letter to both his inner child and his son — to inspire art and remind viewers of a time when creativity was fueled by comic books, cartoons, action figures and imaginary friends.
