The Marine Firemen's Union headquarters in San Francisco's Yerba Buena neighborhood features a striking exterior bas-relief by sculptor Olof Carl Malmquist, depicting marine firemen at work in a ship's engine room. Completed when the building opened in 1957, the sculpture honors the Pacific Coast Marine Firemen, Oilers, Watertenders and Wipers Association, a mariners' labor union founded in San Francisco in 1883. Malmquist, who trained under Lee Lawrie at Yale and later studied in Rome, settled in San Francisco in 1922 and contributed extensively to the city's public architectural sculpture.
