Monumental Beyond Walls Living Artwork By World-Renowned Artist Saype Coming to San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens in October

Massive, ephemeral artwork depicting giant, intertwined hands will be live-painted over three days with biodegradable natural pigments directly on the Gardens’ Great Lawn culminating in a public gathering creating a human solidarity chain of interlocking hands

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, SEPT. 21, 2026 — Saype, the world-renowned artist known for his monumental, ephemeral frescoes on landscapes around the world, will live paint the large-scale artwork Beyond Walls across San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens in October, it was announced today by a collaboration with Villa Albertine San Francisco, the City of San Francisco and Yerba Buena Partnership.

Saype’s Beyond Walls is a global project to connect people involving a massive fresco of intertwined hands, the artworks’ defining symbol. This is Saype’s West Coast debut.

The installation at Yerba Buena Gardens will be painted over three days, October 5-7, with a public celebration October 7 inviting the community to be part of the artwork by forming a massive human chain of interlocking hands surrounding the completed fresco.

“Saype’s work at Yerba Buena Gardens brings together a monumental gesture and a message of solidarity in one of the great civic gathering places of our city,” said Penny Coulter, Chief of Protocol for the City and County of San Francisco.

“To paint in San Francisco offers the city, for the time of an ephemeral work, an image of what it has always carried at its very best: the conviction that human beings, when they choose to connect, can build together what no one could build alone,” said Saype. “Our global project aims to create the longest symbolic human chain around the world promoting values of togetherness, kindness and openness to the world.”

The San Francisco installation follows successful presentations around the world in Venice, Cape Town, Tokyo and 22 other locations, a project that debuted on the Champ de Mars in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower. Working at monumental scale, Saype creates striking frescoes on grass, earth, sand, and snow— temporary artworks that use a biodegradable paint composed primarily of chalk and charcoal.

Saype said Yerba Buena Gardens is an ideal location at the intersection of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the vast collection of public art in the Yerba Buena neighborhood.

This presentation is made possible through a collaboration between Villa Albertine San Francisco, the Yerba Buena Partnership, the Yerba Buena Gardens Conservancy, Mayor Daniel Lurie and the San Francisco Office of Protocol.
