The LeRoy King Carousel is a joyous and historic public art piece hand-carved by Charles I.D. Looff between 1904-1906 for a San Francisco amusement park. But, after the 1906 earthquake, Seattle became its first stop. The spinning zoo returned to San Francisco in 1913 at the Playland-at-the-Beach amusement park until 1972. Then, it made rounds among private collectors, a park in Long Beach, California and, in 1988, to Yerba Buena Gardens. In 2014, it was named LeRoy King Carousel to honor the well-known local labor, civil rights and community leader.
