Thursday, December 11 | featuring Nate Crowe, Spirits Specialist, Skurnik Wines & Spirits

Flatiron Wines & Spirits is delighted to welcome Nate Crowe (@skurnikwines), Spirits Specialist at Skurnik Wines & Spirits, for an evening exploring the craft and complexity of artisanal vermouth. Skurnik has long been known for championing producers who marry heritage and innovation, and their spirits portfolio captures that same philosophy—spotlighting distillers and aperitif makers who work from authentic regional traditions yet approach their craft with a modern sensibility.

Vermouth has undergone a remarkable renaissance in recent years, as bartenders and spirits enthusiasts alike rediscover the nuance of this fortified, aromatized wine. Once a simple cocktail component, vermouth has reclaimed its identity as a beverage worthy of contemplation on its own—expressing the landscape and culture of its origin through locally grown botanicals and carefully selected base wines.

Under Nate’s guidance, we’ll trace vermouth’s journey from its European roots to today’s small-batch revivalists. The tasting will highlight how producers are refining time-honored recipes, experimenting with biodynamic base wines, and sourcing botanicals that tell a story of place—from alpine wormwood to Mediterranean citrus and wild herbs. Along the way, Nate will offer insights into balance, maceration, and the role of sweetness, revealing how each decision shapes texture and flavor.

Expect to taste a curated range of artisanal vermouths spanning diverse styles—perhaps a crisp bianco, a robust rosso, and a dry expression built for aperitivo hour—each demonstrating the category’s surprising versatility. You’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for how vermouth bridges the worlds of wine and spirits, equally at home poured over ice with a twist or starring in a perfectly measured cocktail.
